Description
Geum urbanum
Wood Avens is a perennial wildflower that grows in quite deep shade in woodland, as a understory plant or in hedge-bottoms. It is also known as Herb Bennet(not to be confused with Herb Robert which is a a type of geranium). Soft, lobed leaves are slightly hairy and rosettes stay green in the winter, on the whole. Fine branched stems hold small open buttercup-like yellow flowers at any time of year but mainly May to October. Seed heads are brownish pink and are covered in barbs which readily hook onto clothes, dogs etc. Can be quite invasive.
