Description
Silene maritima
Sea Campion is a perennial wildflower of sea-side cliffs, exposed shingle, sand dunes and off-shore islands. In early summer low growing mounds of waxy grey green foliage produce masses of white flowers from inflated calyces.
It is happy in full sun and good drainage and makes a good weed suppressing ground cover. Germinates easily from seed but needs disturbed ground to germinate. Sow at anytime. In the autumn or early spring cut back the mounds of foliage to encourage new foliage, otherwise it is carefree.
