Description
Agrostemma githago
Corncockle is an attractive slender annual wildflower which was once a widespread weed of arable crops in the south and east. It has been known in cornfields since the Iron Age. Sow on bare soil in late summer, autumn or spring as a nurse crop for new perennial wildflower meadows to give some pink purple colour in the first year. Or sow in the garden for its own sake! Autumn sowing gives the best results. The flowers unfurl in a graceful spiral way.
To encourage Corncockle to persist from year to year, the soil needs to be cultivated every autumn. Thrives on sandy loam in the sun.
