It makes an elegant large deciduous shrub, often multi-stemmed and is quite slow-growing. Because the shade it casts is quite light, under-planting is usually successful, especially with spring bulbs.

Planted in semi-shade and in shelter, this is a fine garden plant with long season of interest.

On mature trees the creamy pea-like flowers form in large terminal clusters in late summer and autumn. Bee friendly. The long seed pods are persistent.

Japanese Quince Seed
Chaenomeles japonicaJapanese Quince, also known as Japonica, is a small, low growing, thorny shrub with bright orange red flowers, appearing very early in spring. These develop into rounded yellow fruits in the autumn. This deciduous shrub has small oval mid green leaves. Pruning can be done in the spring after flowering, or carefully in winter whilst making sure that the flower spurs are not being chopped off. Although Chaenomeles doesn’t flower as well in a shady spot, it makes a useful shrub for a north wall.

Japanese Red Pine Seed
Pinus densifloraJapenese Red Pine is a large tree with paired needles that are up to 12cm long and twisted. It makes an architectural shape, eventually, and is often used in Japanese gardens. In Korea it is held in special esteem for it’s connections with Confucius, and is mentioned in the S. Korea National Anthem! Commercially it was historically used for timber and resin production.

Japanese Stone Pine Seed
Pinus pumilaJapanese Stone Pine is a beautiful low growing, sometimes prostrate, hardy shrub-like tree native to north-east Asia including Japan. The female cones are purplish when young turning to a red-brown at maturity. Needles are dense and in bundles of 5. In the wild it grows at high elevations, above the forest line and often with willow and alder scrub. Very tolerant of extreme climates – a tough specimen!

It fruits with long pendulous strings of nuts which are known as Heart Nuts, because of the shape. They are sweet and tasty. New growth may be tender to late frosts, so shelter is appreciated.

The curved and twisted 5cm long leaves are blue-green with blue-white inner surfaces, growing in bunches of 5. Most often seen in the semi-dwarf form used in Japanese style gardens.

Japanese Zelkova Seed
Zelkova serrataZelkova is a medium sized graceful wide spreading tree with a round crown and smooth grey bark. The slender oval leaves are up to 12cm long and have narrow pointed teeth. In autumn they turn a bronze red. It is related to Elm (Ulmus) but has proven to be resistant to Dutch Elm disease and so is suggested as a substitute. Pollution tolerant so can be used as a street tree. In Japan it is used as a valuable timber tree.

Japanese/Korean Pepper Seed

Japanese Pepper is a deciduous shrub or small tree. It has pinnate shiny leaves which colour brilliant yellow in autumn. Both the bark and leaves are aromatic and the younger leaves can be used as a flavouring in Korean cuisine. Fairly vicious spines develop on the branch and stem undersides. If both male and female shrubs are present, the green/yellow flowers in April and May will develop into scarlet berries containing black shiny seeds – these are the peppery bits. So it is a good idea to grow several shrubs together.

Related and similar to Pinus ponderosa but with less prickley cones. The resin is scented allegedly of vanilla/lemon/apple or honeysuckle. Tolerates cold and dry and high altitudes.

Cercis siliquastrumThe Judas tree is a medium sized deciduous tree or large shrub which becomes wreathed in lilac flowers in late spring, sprouting even directly from the main trunk, before the heart- shaped leaves emerge. Purple tinted seed pods develop in autumn.

Juniper Seed
Juniperus communisJuniper produces the berry to flavour gin and is used to make a beer in Scandinavian countries! Dried berries are used sparingly in cooking to flavour meat and game. A medium to large sized evergreen shrub with silver backed leaves/needles and black berries. It can grow tall or low and spreading, and anything in-between! It is being used increasingly to plant the sides of northern motorways. Very prickly.

New leaves open pinkish and are early to fall in the autumn with yellow colouration. Pale green flowers in June give rise to large leathery seed pods. The seeds are toxic until roasted when they can be used as a coffee substitute.

Kerria Seed
Kerria japonicaKerria or Japanese Rose is a graceful suckering shrub that produces rich butter yellow flowers in mid spring. Although it is deciduous its green stems provide winter colour. The shrub mainly seen in gardens is the double-flowered variety, but there are also white flowered ones and varieties with variegated leaves. Kerria from seed will produce quite large single flowers early in the summer.

Korean Pine Seed

Large cones are produced towards the end of branches, ripening to 11cm long. The seeds contained in the cones are large and used in cooking, like Pinus pinea.

The highly scented violet flowers are borne in dense spikes in mid summer. Great for bees. After flowering, a light trim over with shears keeps the shrubs neat.

The aromatic flowers are a deeper blue than in some other cultivars and appear in mid summer. Use as an informal, low hedge as a border for paths and lawns. It is an Old English Lavender similar to ‘Hidcote’ and is frequently used in cottage gardens. Lightly trim with shears after flowering to keep neat. Full of bees in the summer and a less acid scent than French Lavender.
