Description

Digitalis purpurea

Foxgloves are an extremely attractive biennial  wildflower. Rosettes of soft furry leaves produced in the first year, throw tall stems of pink/purple tubular flowers in the second year. The inside of the flowers is highly spotted to guide bees in for the nectar and pollen. Grows in open woodland, shaded woodland and hedgerows. All parts of the plant are highly toxic, but a drug  extracted called digitalin, is used to treat heart disease. During  World War II the Womens’ Institute used to collect and dry leaves for use by the forces medical services.

Sow anytime of year in situ or in trays to plant out when big enough.
